Does the bank charge fees for currency conversion on credit card transactions?

Modified on Tue, 5 May at 10:55 AM

We have prepared special terms for the most popular European destinations. For transactions in the currency pairs EUR/PLN, CZK/PLN, DKK/PLN, HUF/PLN, SEK/PLN, and RON/PLN, our bank does not charge any additional fees. This means that when you pay with your card in countries using these currencies, you do not incur the bank’s currency conversion fee. For payments in currencies not listed above, a standard margin of 0.5% is added to the transaction.

What should you watch out for? Additional fees independent of the bank:

Although we do not charge a margin, two types of fees charged by third-party operators may apply during transactions:

  1. DCC (Dynamic Currency Conversion): This is a service offered by the owner of the ATM or payment terminal. This fee is charged if, during payment, you choose to settle in Polish zlotys (PLN) instead of the local currency. To avoid it, always select payment in the local currency of the given country on the screen.
  2. Surcharge: This is an additional fee for using the device, charged directly by the bank that owns the ATM (this is very common in Spain, among other places).

Example: If you want to withdraw 50 EUR in Spain, the authorization amount may be 52 EUR. The difference (2 EUR) is the cost charged by the ATM owner, which the customer covers.

Remember: Before approving the withdrawal, the ATM is always required to display information about any surcharge on the screen.
